Louis, 20, Art student/Smart ass
WHAT ARE YOU UP TO TODAY?
Talking with you, obviously and then I’m going to work from 5 til 9 and then I’ll go to sleep.
WHERE DO YOU WORK?
Bussey rooftop cinema.
WHAT’S THE CROWD LIKE?
To be honest not that many people have come recently. The most people I’ve seen at the cinema is to see Magic Mike 2.
WHAT GETS YOU UP IN THE MORNING?
The crippling thought of loneliness. Also I listen to Mark Kermode’s radio podcasts when I go to sleep and wake up with it chatting away. The podcast is an hour and a half and plays on loop. Sometimes I’ll also wake up to recorded lectures by Grayson Perry.
DIDN’T YOU MEET HIM THE OTHER DAY?
Yeah. I was in Southbank on my way to BFI and I saw him, swaggering, well not really swaggering but of skipping along the street in platform heels. Obviously I went up to him and he was nice. Kind of blunt, but nice. He was on his way to lecture at the Hayward so probably didn’t want to be talking with me.
WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?
The idea of watching more films and shots that I have in my for my own films. Say I have a specific shot, like a horse and zebra playing chess- I’ll have to get up and make a storyline or a painting or something. Most of my ideas come at night. I guess I’m kind of nocturnal in that sense.
BEST PLACE TO KEEP W@VED IN LONDON AND WHY?
I never get asked to go out so no idea. Actually, Brixton McDonalds. Great place to watch people pre or post clubbing.
EVERYONE AT ART SCHOOL IS A CLICHE. YES OR NO?
Yeah, I strongly agree. Everyone is very inspired by the art scenes. I feel the current trend is minimal, dressing only in white. They’re too afraid to be individual which is what good art is all about. Using smart words and arty films is what they seem to think art means.
DON’T YOU THINK ART IS BASED ON BEING TRENDY NOW?
Not for long. You cant be a ‘cool’ artist can you? All good artists come out the blue; they’re not cool. I can relate to a lot of that. All these magazines featuring this ‘trendy art’ are just searching for things that people want to see. All good art is the anthesis of that.
I’D DESCRIBE YOUR ART AS DARK HUMOURED FILM EXPLORING SOCIAL ISSUES. IS THAT ACCURATE?
I wouldn’t say exploring. I’d say satirising social and political issues. I guess also observations about what situation I’m in. Currently I’m at art school so am inspired by that. My films make me come across as a smart ass.
HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHEN YOU’VE MADE IT?
Wetherspoons news. You know that Wetherspoons magazine they have in their pubs? It’s full of random news about beer and events that have happened in their pubs like knitting conventions or cosplay competitions and stuff.
Once you’ve made it in there you know you’re going places.
