WORDS: ANNA SAMPSON
ART: ORIELE STEINER
HEY ORIELE, WHAT’S GONE ON THIS WEEK?
Just working really. Been a pretty relaxing week to be honest! I completed my first large scale Oil Pastel drawing, which has made me really excited about my work in the future. I’m starting to use a lot of imagination in my work, so I’m just writing some ideas down, trying to understand how to turn thoughts in to drawings!
WHAT’S THE LAST THING YOU COOKED?
I fried some salmon in chilli, butter, soy sauce, honey and garlic. With some stir fried vegetables with hoisin and garlic sauce.
MIDNIGHT SNACK OF CHOICE?
Hummus, olives and pitta bread and maybe some crisps.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR ART?
Everything around me. People are really important; my work is very figurative and has a narrative so I’m constantly finding stories around me as well as looking at the world aesthetically. I’m influenced by artist’s work, which tell a story. I’d like to think that my work does that. Also colour… I’m inspired by colour, which artist isn’t?
ON A SCALE FROM 1 – 10 HOW PSYCHED WHERE YOU WHEN YOU GOT SELECTED FOR THE BLOOMBERG NEW CONTEMPORARIES?
10 for sure.
DO YOU CREATE IN A STUDIO?
I do have a studio yes. But because a lot of my work is made with Oil pastels, I like to do them at home, in my room where I’m comfortable and hidden. When I want or need to paint I go to the studio, so I’m not there a lot but when I am stuck in to a painting, I’ll be there all the time.
A GENIE HAS SAID YOU CAN EXHIBIT ANYWHERE…
WHERE DO YOU GO?
That’s a hard question, because I’m just happy to exhibit full stop! There are so many places I’d like to exhibit. Maybe Berlin, I love the art in Berlin.
WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NITE?
IF YOU WEREN’T DOING ART, WHAT WOULD BE POPPIN?
Probably acting and singing on stage, I’m can be a bit of a drama queen, a lot of people have said I’d be good in theatre.
